On-the-Job Training

You can gain real job experience while learning important skills in a supportive work environment. Through On-the-Job Training (OJT) or Work-Based Learning (WBLE), you’ll work alongside others, hold a regular job, and build valuable skills for future opportunities. Virtual work experiences require approval from VR staff.

Paid Work Based Learning for Youth

Work-Based Learning Experience is a program where students learn important skills by practicing real work tasks. It helps connect what they learn in school to real-life jobs and future careers. Students are actively involved and get feedback on the skills they gain.

They can take part in multiple experiences to improve soft skills, learn hard skills they can use in any job, build their resumes, and connect with people in their community.

On-the-Job Training for Adults

On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a short-term program that helps you learn new skills while working at a real job. It takes place in a community workplace where most of the employees do not have disabilities.

During OJT, you’ll be part of the team, working alongside others and learning by doing. You’ll interact with coworkers just like anyone else in a similar job, gaining experience and building valuable skills for the future.

In Depths

When participating in Work-Based Learning Experiences or On-the-Job Training (OJT), you will start with an assessment and plan. This plan includes your interests, strengths, and any help you might need to succeed in future jobs. Based on your plan, you’ll be matched with a worksite or employer that fits your:

  • Strengths, skills, and interests

  • Transportation options

  • School schedule

  • Age

  • Any challenges related to your disability

You’ll meet with the worksite supervisor and have a chance to interview for the position, with help from a job coach. An agreement will be made between you, your parent/guardian (if needed), the employer, and others involved. This agreement will explain everyone’s responsibilities, the hours you’ll work, the skills you’ll learn, and other important details.

If you work during the program, you’ll be paid every two weeks. Your paycheck will include a summary showing any taxes or other deductions required by law. If you’re interested in learning on the job or joining a work-based learning program, contact us to find out more. Together, we can create a workplace where everyone has a fair chance to succeed!
